Bridport Hatchery – Celebrating 55 years of operation

Tasmania’s first commercial trout farm, located in Bridport, recently celebrated 55 years of operation.

The farm was established by Alec H. Purves of Sevrup Fisheries who studied trout farming overseas and worked for Snake River Trout Co., an American company who are now Clear Springs Trout Company.

In 1963, the Tasmanian Government passed legislation to allow commercial trout farming and Sevrup Fisheries was granted a license in 1964—in no small part due to Alec’s lobbying.
