Statement to ABC regarding bird entanglements

  • Huon Aquaculture rejects the unsubstantiated allegation that bird mortalities or entanglements are being hidden by the company.
  • Our employees are required and expected to report any instances of entangled or deceased birds to our dedicated and highly-trained Wildlife team.
  • The ABC has not provided any evidence to support its claim that Huon employees have been instructed not to report bird deaths or entanglements.
  • Huon reports any entanglements, releases and deceased birds to DPIPWE and our leases are subject to spot inspections by the DPIPWE Marine Farm Branch. Huon also voluntarily publicly reports deceased birds on our Sustainability Dashboard.
  • Neither of the two photos shown to Huon by the ABC provide any evidence that the photos were taken in or on a Huon pen. Neither photo shows a date stamp.
  • One shows a dead bird floating in water outside of a pen while the other photo shows a live bird.  In this second scenario, the company’s expectation is that any employee must attempt to release the bird immediately and then report the entanglement and release through the well-documented process.
