“We believe that by working with the largest salmon producers around the world we can effect meaningful change in our industry and meet constantly growing demand for our product through sustainable practices.”
Frances Bender, Co-founder and owner of Huon Aquaculture
The Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) is a global leadership initiative founded and lead by salmon producers dedicated to determining the best measures by which our sector can grow sustainably. Salmon aquaculture is the world’s fastest growing food production system. Maintaining this and making a contribution to increasing global food demand has to go hand in hand with a direct focus on minimising our environmental footprint and acting as socially responsible members of our community. Huon is proud to be a member of an organisation that joins salmon farmers at the forefront of our industry and is dedicated to achieving its aims.
The GSI has four main objectives:
- Bring together global farmed salmon producers and other industry stakeholders to strive towards significantly improving the sustainability of salmon farming
- Cooperation to continue to outperform other sources of animal protein in terms of contribution to human health, environmental responsibility, and efficient feed conversion rate, and to be widely recognized for this accomplishment
- Achieve the highest standards of corporate citizenship in the regions where members operate
- Translate environmental and social sustainability into greater economic sustainability through enhanced social license and market acceptance
