Huon Aquaculture recognises that there is increased interest surrounding its operations, environmental footprint and processes for achieving sustainable practices.
With the aim of increasing transparency and providing the community with a more direct link to the science and monitoring which underpins our operations this page will include reports and updates which have been identified as areas of interest.
We strongly encourage members of the community to provide feedback on specific areas of interest by getting in touch using our online contact form.
Macquarie Harbour is both a sensitive waterway and important growing region for Huon Aquaculture. Huon has long advocated a cautious approach to stocking levels in Macquarie Harbour and recently took the strong step of challenging the EPA’s recent biomass decision in the Supreme Court of Tasmania.
Huon has taken the decision to publicly release its recent submission to the EPA’s draft biomass determination and supporting documents as part of the Company’s commitment to transparency.

Huon River feed inputs
Huon Aquaculture voluntarily reported to the regulator that it had exceeded its expected feed inputs into the Huon River. As a result, the regulator has made amendments to Huon Aquaculture’s marine farming lease licences in the Huon River and Port Esperance.
Huon Aquaculture has a proud track record of strong environmental performance and has provided this information in the interest of transparency and to ensure upfront communication with the regulator and importantly, the community.
Further information regarding the Huon River and Port Esperance marine farming lease licence amendments is available here.
Our interactive Sustainability Dashboard presents current company information on topics as diverse as antibiotic use to video of a diver inside a fish pen.
Our Sustainability Dashboard has been developed by starting with what the community wants to know and delivering in a way that’s simple and easy to access and understand.
Whether you are on your laptop, tablet or mobile phone, the Dashboard is a ready source of current information.
We update the Dashboard continually and add or remove tiles as we learn more about what people want to know about us.
Macquarie Harbour Dissolved Oxygen Working Group Report October 2014
The Macquarie Harbour Dissolved Oxygen Working Group (MHDOWG) Report, October 2014 follows the establishment of the MHDOWG by the Tasmanian Salmonid Growers Association (TSGA) with the purpose of examining levels of dissolved oxygen in Macquarie Harbour in 2014.
The MHDOWG is comprised of representatives from the aquaculture industry, scientific community and institutions and government, including Huon Aquaculture. The MHDOWG Report 2014 was never intended for public release and is an internal and highly technical document. However, recognising the high level of public interest in dissolved oxygen levels in Macquarie Harbour the report has been made publicly available.
From the recommendations made in the October report ongoing research is currently being carried out and this work is referred to as the MHDOWG Working Report. A July update to the MHDOWG Working Report is currently being reviewed and is due to be made publically available in September 2015.
Please note that the MHDOWG Working Report is an ongoing report and is not intended to be completed or finalised and the MHDOWG will continue to provide updates to the working report.
You can find the MHDOWG Report October 2014 here.
If you have any questions about the report or its findings please contact us using our online contact form.
