JOBS
Huon is proud to be a major employer in Tasmania’s regional communities. We advocate for our
employees, the communities in which we operate and the people who rely on salmon farms for
their livelihoods.
How many jobs does Huon actually support?
We directly employ more than 1,000 people nationally, with most employees based in
Tasmania. Huon also supports small, medium and often family-owned businesses across
Tasmania indirectly through our supply chain, from tradespeople to truckies, planners, boat
builders and planning professionals, often from regional communities. That’s why we have
invested hundreds of millions of dollars in our suppliers. Because when local workers thrive, our
whole community thrives.
COMMUNITY
We’re proud to be an active part of our local communities. Communities like Strahan on the
west coast and Huon Valley in the southeast are made up of salmon farming families.
How does Huon help our local communities?
We proudly support a range of community groups, sports clubs, charities and local events, like
partnering with local schools on STEM initiatives and healthy eating programs. We also donate
fresh salmon to those in need, sharing the food we farm with the communities we’re part of.
Since 2023, we’ve donated more than 2000 kg of premium salmon to local organisations.
OUR ENVIRONMENTAL FOCUS
As pioneers of aquaculture, we continue to minimise our environmental footprint through
innovation and with world class salmon farming methods.
What’s Huon doing to reduce your environmental impact?
While salmon farming has a relatively low carbon footprint, we’re committed to going further.
Our innovations include remote feeding technology to reduce wastage plus the fish waste from these facilities is turned into compost for local farmers
How many fish are in salmon pens?
Huon have some of the lowest stocking densities in the world; our farming practices mean our
stocking ratios at sea are 1% fish to 99% water.
How is Huon helping to tackle climate change?
We’re working towards our sustainability targets every day and continue to make improvements
across our business. Ways we’re taking action right now:
- Selectively breeding more resilient fish
- More onshore nurseries for less impact at sea
- Minimising waste with remote feeding technology
- Upcycling 99% of our organic by-products
- Using 98% recycled water in our RAS facilities
- Sourcing more local feed ingredients
- Increasing use of plant-based proteins
- Improving feed efficiency so we produce more protein than we use
Will Huon do more salmon farming on land?
Yes. Huon is leading the way in land-based salmon farming. Our fish can spend more than half
their life in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS). This approach improves fish health by
reducing exposure to disease, lowering stress, and minimising time in the marine
environment—supporting both sustainability and improved fish performance.
Plus, the fish waste from these facilities is turned into compost for local farmers. However, land-
based aquaculture requires more land, resources and energy to operate, than marine farming.
We believe a balance of land and sea farming will allow us to continue to farm more sustainably
and keep employing more locals into the future.
SUSTAINABILITY
What is Huon doing to farm fish more sustainably?
We recognise our responsibility to the environment and communities where we operate. We’re
committed to finding better ways to care for the environment. From upcycling organic by-
products to developing technology that feeds fish remotely, we’re focused on reducing waste
and improving efficiency.
OUR WATERWAYS
We take our environmental responsibilities seriously. We recognise that we share these
waterways, and we operate within a highly regulated environment.
What’s Huon doing to keep our rivers and oceans pristine?
We regularly monitor water quality in line with EPA standards and with innovations like remote
feeding technology and regular video surveys of the seafloor.
OPEN AND TRANSPARENT REGULATION
Salmon farming is one of the most highly regulated industries in Australia. These regulations
include Environmental Standards for Tasmanian Marine Finfish Farming (2023), Environment
Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), Environmental Management and
Pollution Control Act 1994 (EMPCA), Marine Farming Planning Act 1995, Biosecurity Act 2019
(Tas), Salmonid Biosecurity Zones Regulations 2022 and Tasmanian Salmon Industry Plan
(2023).
What regular reporting does Huon provide to government?
Huon regularly provides reports to all levels of government to maintain transparency and meet
regulatory requirements. These include Environmental Licence Reporting to EPA Tasmania,
which covers compliance with environmental conditions; Production and Operational Metrics
submitted to NRE Tasmania, detailing farming outputs and performance; Mortality and Incident
Reporting to ensure timely communication of significant events; and Planning and Development
Reporting to support oversight of infrastructure and site development. These reports reflect
Huon’s commitment to sustainable aquaculture and responsible operations.
Where can we find out more?
The public can access some of Huon Aquaculture’s government-submitted reports through the
relevant regulatory bodies:
EPA Tasmania publishes environmental monitoring data and reports related to marine and
freshwater finfish farms, including Huon’s operations. These may include licence conditions,
compliance assessments, and environmental impact reports. You can explore these resources
on the EPA Tasmania Salmonid Aquaculture page. https://epa.tas.gov.au/business-industry/regulation/salmon-aquaculture
NRE Tasmania provides access to aquaculture lease and licence application forms, salmon
farming data, and strategic planning documents. Public reports and data related to production
and operational metrics may be available via the Aquaculture section of NRE Tasmania

FISH WELFARE
How does Huon look after fish welfare?
We take meticulous care of our fish from hatchery to harvest. They’re nurtured in our land-
based nurseries where our world-class facilities are designed to mimic natural environments
and fish behaviours, reducing stress and promoting health, then raised in our award-winning
Fortress Pens, with some of the lowest stocking densities worldwide. These spacious pens
allow salmon to swim freely while protecting marine life. We’re also implementing industry
leading practices like humanely harvesting our fish at night, freshwater bathing, selective
breeding, and environmental monitoring.
Lots of salmon died in 2025. How did this happen and what did Huon do about it?
In early 2025, unusually warm waters combined with a bacterial outbreak in the
D’Entrecasteaux Channel caused losses across the entire salmon industry. At Huon, we acted
quickly with veterinary care, strict biosecurity, and full transparency. We notified the EPA
immediately, kept local fishers informed, and strengthened our systems to reduce future risks.
ANTIBIOTICS
We follow strict protocols and ensure every Huon salmon is 100% free of antibiotics at harvest.
What’s your policy on antibiotics?
Fish welfare is central to everything we do, and we also understand concerns about antibiotics
use. That’s why we only use them as a last resort and only when there’s a serious threat to fish
health and welfare and on the advice of our vets. In fact, we’ve only used antibiotics on three
occasions in the past decade. Each time, under strict regulation with full transparency to the
EPA and local fishers. We also ensured every fish remained healthy and safe to eat before
harvest, completely free of antibiotics. This is a requirement of Food Standards Australia NZ and
the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority.
How do vaccines and antibiotics differ?
Vaccines help prevent diseases in salmon by preparing their immune system to fight specific
pathogens before they get sick commonly used against viral and bacterial infections. Antibiotics
are used to treat bacterial infections after they occur.
Did Huon use antibiotics on salmon in 2025?
Yes. During an unprecedented bacterial outbreak in February 2025, we treated some salmon
with an approved antibiotic for 10 days. Just as humans, pets, or farm animals occasionally
need medicine, fish sometimes do too. Once they recovered, every salmon was carefully tested
to ensure it was free of antibiotics before harvest.
Does Huon rely on antibiotics to keep fish healthy?
We take a holistic approach. We focus on prevention through responsible site management,
strict biosecurity and careful husbandry. Antibiotics are a tool, used only on three occasions in
the past decade.
Are these antibiotics safe for humans?
Yes. The antibiotics we use are approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines
Authority (APVMA) and administered under strict veterinary supervision. Once fish have
recovered, they’re tested to ensure they are free of antibiotics before harvest.
MACQUARIE HARBOUR
We believe in working with nature to protect this pristine habitat.
Why is Huon still farming salmon in Macquarie Harbour?
The industry’s activities in the harbour are monitored and regulated by Tasmania’s Independent
Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). Since 2016 the industry has complied with EPA
requests to gradually reduce its biomass levels in the harbour to help improve and stabilise
Dissolved Oxygen levels. The most recent reporting from the EPA indicates the harbour is in its
best condition for over a decade. The industry is very confident it is operating in the harbour at
an environmentally sustainable level. In November 2023, the EPA extended the industry’s
environmental licenses to operate in the harbour for a further two-years.
FOOD SAFETY
The quality and safety of our product is paramount.
Is artificial colour added to farmed salmon?
No. Every salmon in the world gets their natural pink colour from a healthy antioxidant called
astaxanthin. Wild salmon get astaxanthin from the krill they eat, while farmed salmon get the
same antioxidant from their feed. Astaxanthin is a natural supplement you’ll find at your local
chemist or organic shop.
Is salmon safe to eat?
Absolutely. Huon Salmon is safe, premium quality, and rigorously tested. We harvest only
healthy, live fish from carefully managed pens near our shore-based facilities to ensure
freshness and minimal stress.
We control every step of production, ensuring exceptional quality, traceability, and animal
welfare. Raised in Tasmania’s pristine waters and fed a carefully formulated diet, Huon Salmon
is not only safe — it’s delicious, nutritious, and responsibly produced. Huon Aquaculture
operates in compliance with the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) Food
Standards Code, which sets mandatory requirements for food safety, labelling, and hygiene
across the Australian food industry.
